How the TN visa creates opportunities many US hotels don’t realize they have

Canadian and US Flags

Over the years working in hospitality recruitment across North America, one conversation comes up again and again with U.S. clients. They tell me they cannot find the right leadership locally, they assume bringing someone from abroad will be complicated, expensive, or slow, and they often rule out international hiring before even looking at the options. What many do not realize is that there is a very straightforward pathway available to them through the TN visa, and it opens the door to one of the strongest hospitality talent pools in the world. Canada.

I have placed numerous Canadian professionals into the United States under the TN visa category, most often under the Hotel Manager classification, and in many cases the client had never considered this route before we spoke. Once they understand how the process works, it becomes clear that this is not an unusual or risky solution. In fact, it is often one of the simplest ways to secure experienced leadership quickly.

The TN visa exists under the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement and allows certain professionals from Canada to work in the U.S. in specific occupations. One of those occupations is Hotel Manager. For hospitality employers, this is extremely useful because it covers many senior operational roles within hotels and resorts, including General Managers, Directors of Operations, Rooms Division leaders, and other management positions even and including Chefs up to Sous Chef level, provided the candidate’s education and experience align with the classification which is our job to ensure candidates presented, do in fact pre-qualify for TN status.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that the visa process will be expensive or require months of legal work. In many cases, it does not. For Canadian citizens, the TN can often be obtained directly at the border or airport with the correct documentation. This usually includes an offer letter, a detailed support letter describing the role, proof of the candidate’s qualifications, and confirmation that the position falls within the Hotel Manager category. When prepared properly, the process can be completed quickly and at a fraction of the cost employers expect compared to other visa types.

Another advantage is that the TN visa is granted for up to three years at a time and can be renewed. This gives employers stability while still allowing flexibility. It also makes the move attractive to candidates who may not be ready for permanent immigration but are open to working in the United States for several years.

From the candidate side, there is strong interest in U.S. opportunities. Many Canadian hospitality professionals are drawn to the United States for a variety of reasons. Warmer climates, larger resort environments, different tax structures, and broader career growth all play a part. Canada produces a very high level of hospitality talent, particularly from luxury hotels, resort destinations, and Michelin-level kitchens. Because the Canadian market is smaller, many of these professionals are open to relocation if the right opportunity is presented.

This is where the value of working with a recruiter who understands the TN process becomes clear. The visa itself may be straightforward, but the details matter. The job title must be correct. The support letter must be written properly. The candidate’s background has to fit the category. When those pieces are not aligned, applications can be delayed or refused. When they are handled correctly, the process is often smooth.

At Talent Inc., a significant part of our work involves helping U.S. employers access this Canadian talent pool. We regularly advise clients on whether a role qualifies under the Hotel Manager category, we guide them on how the offer should be structured, and we work closely with candidates to make sure their documentation supports the application. In many cases, employers are surprised by how quickly a position can be filled once the search expands beyond the U.S. alone.

The reality is that there is an incredible amount of experienced hospitality leadership in Canada that U.S. employers never see simply because they assume hiring internationally is too complicated. The TN visa changes that. It provides a practical, cost-effective way to bring in proven professionals who already understand North American service standards, luxury operations, and large-scale resort environments.

For hotels and resorts struggling to find the right people, especially at the management level, this is an option worth considering. With the right guidance, it's an excellent talent pool expansion strategy for hiring teams.
